Enclosures Are Mostly Fixed Glass

Shower enclosures and glass panels are the larger glass jobs: two or more panels that form the walls of a shower, usually with a door, or a single fixed glass panel for a walk-in shower with no door at all. Where a door fills an opening between two walls, an enclosure creates the walls itself. That makes measuring, anchoring and the floor underneath more important, because the glass has to meet the tile, the curb and itself at exact angles.

Types of enclosures

  • Corner (90-degree) enclosures: a door and a return panel meeting at a right angle, for showers open on two sides.
  • Neo-angle enclosures: three pieces of glass across an angled corner, common in smaller primary baths.
  • Inline door and panels: a straight run of glass with a door and one or two fixed panels across a wide opening.
  • Walk-in or wet-room panels: one or two fixed panels with no door, used with curbless or low-curb showers.
  • Half walls with glass: glass mounted on top of a tiled knee wall.

The floor matters as much as the glass

A doorless walk-in panel only works if the shower floor slopes properly toward the drain and the panel is long enough to block spray. A curbless shower needs that slope built into the floor itself. If you are remodeling, we prefer to talk with whoever is building the shower before the tile goes in, so the curb, the drain location and solid backing for clamps all line up with the glass plan.

Safety glass and wet-area rules

All the glass in an enclosure is covered by safety glazing rules. The federal standard, 16 CFR 1201, lists shower doors and enclosures as Category II, its stricter class. The 2022 California Residential Code, Section R308.4.5, treats glass in walls and enclosures that face or contain a bathtub or shower as a hazardous location when the bottom edge is under 60 inches above the standing surface. That covers nearly every enclosure panel, so every panel we supply is tempered.

Steam showers

A steam shower needs a fully sealed enclosure that runs to the ceiling, usually with a transom or vent panel above the door. The seals, door swing and glass height all differ from a regular shower. If you plan a steam unit, tell us at the estimate so we can design the glass for it.

Hard water on a lot of glass

An enclosure means many square feet of glass, and in Santa Clara, where the city's wells supply water averaging 255 mg/L of hardness, all of it will show spots if left to dry. A factory coating or an applied hydrophobic coating is worth pricing for an enclosure. So is a ventilation fan that actually clears the room. Low-iron glass also makes mineral film a little less obvious because there is no green edge tint to compete with.

Cost

Published ranges show how much layout drives price. ThePricer lists a frameless door with one fixed panel at about $1,400 to $3,300, a neo-angle enclosure at $1,500 to $2,800 and multi-panel enclosures from $2,500 to more than $4,500. Fixr lists enclosures generally at $1,800 to $5,000 and neo-angle designs at $1,500 to $3,500. Inch Calculator notes that custom enclosures often start around $5,000 installed.

How It Works

1. Plan the layout

We look at the floor slope, curb, drain and walls with you, ideally before tile.

2. Measure the angles

Every panel and corner is measured once the tile is finished.

3. Quote and order

Written quote; glass is tempered to size after you approve.

4. Install and seal

Panels set with clamps or channels, door hung, joints sealed.

Shower Enclosures & Glass Panels Questions

Do I need a door on a walk-in shower?

Not always. A fixed panel can be enough if the shower is deep enough and the floor drains well. Shallow showers usually need a door or a second panel to keep spray in.

How much does a glass shower enclosure cost?

Published ranges run from about $1,400 for a door and one panel to $5,000 or more for custom multi-panel enclosures. Layout, glass thickness and coatings drive the price.

Should the glass go up before or after the tile?

After. Final measurements are taken on finished tile because tempered glass cannot be cut afterward. It helps to plan the glass before tiling, though, so backing and curbs are in the right places.

Is a neo-angle enclosure a good choice for a small bathroom?

It can be. A neo-angle fits a corner and leaves more floor space than a square shower of similar size, though the door is usually narrower.
