Glass for a City Built in Waves
Shower doors in Fremont are rarely a one-size job, because the city itself was assembled from pieces. Mission San Jose, Centerville, Niles, Irvington and Warm Springs merged on January 23, 1956, and each grew on its own timeline. A bathroom in a Centerville tract house and one in a newer Warm Springs home can differ in wall plumbness, tile thickness and alcove width, and those differences decide which door will hang right.
Which water zone are you in?
The Alameda County Water District does not send the same water to every Fremont street. Its 2025 water quality report says central and south Fremont receive treated surface water, with hardness averaging 96 ppm, while north Fremont gets blended water that averages 138 ppm and runs as high as 160. That gap matters on glass. Hard water leaves calcium spots that bake onto a panel as it dries, and the north side of town will see that film form faster. ACWD also publishes a hardness map so you can look up your neighborhood before we talk.
For homes in the higher-hardness areas, we usually suggest a factory-applied protective coating on the glass and a fixed squeegee spot inside the shower. For south Fremont, the coating is still worth considering, but it is less urgent.
The 1960s left a lot of tub alcoves
Fremont's population jumped from 43,790 in 1960 to 100,869 in 1970, and Wikipedia describes the Centerville area as full of subdivisions built in the 1950s and 1960s. Glenmoor Gardens, the largest subdivision in the city, started with no more than 75 houses when its homeowners association formed in 1953. Many homes from that era still have the original 60-inch tub-shower alcove, often with a framed slider or a curtain rod. Replacing that with a semi-frameless bypass slider or a fixed tub screen is a common upgrade.
Options we install in Fremont
- Frameless shower doors in 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch tempered glass for walk-in showers
- Semi-frameless doors when walls are out of square and a light frame helps hide the gaps
- Sliding doors for tub alcoves and narrow bathrooms
- Enclosures and fixed glass panels for open walk-in layouts and neo-angle corners
- Tub glass doors and splash screens
- Repair and replacement of rollers, hinges, seals and cracked panels
Walls that may have moved
The Hayward Fault runs through Fremont, and the 1868 quake on it ruined the original Mission San Jose church. Wikipedia notes that parts of the fault creep at under 0.5 cm a year. Slow movement plus decades of settling can leave shower walls slightly out of plumb. We measure top, middle and bottom on every opening rather than trusting a single width, so a frameless panel does not end up with a tapered gap.
How a Fremont job runs
You send photos or call (408) 604-0313. We visit, measure, check the tile and the wall framing behind the hinge side, and give you a written quote. Custom tempered glass is cut to order, so there is a wait between measuring and installation. Installation itself is usually a few hours, and the silicone needs time to cure before the first shower.
Fremont Facts That Affect Your Shower
- Two hardness levels in one city. ACWD's 2025 water quality report lists treated surface water serving central and south Fremont at an average hardness of 96 ppm, and blended water serving north Fremont at an average of 138 ppm (range 120 to 160).
- A 1960s building boom. Fremont grew from 43,790 residents in 1960 to 100,869 in 1970, a 130.3% jump, and the Centerville area filled with subdivisions built in the 1950s and 1960s, including Glenmoor Gardens.
- Expensive homes, mixed tenure. Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 put Fremont's owner-occupied rate at 60.8% and the median owner-occupied home value at $1,403,800, with 88.2% of residents in the same house a year earlier.
- On the Hayward Fault. The Hayward Fault runs through Fremont. The 1868 earthquake on it collapsed buildings across the area and destroyed the 1809 adobe church at Mission San Jose.

Fremont Questions
Is the water harder in north Fremont than in Mission San Jose or Warm Springs?
According to ACWD's 2025 report, yes on average. North Fremont receives blended water averaging 138 ppm hardness, while central and south Fremont receive treated surface water averaging 96 ppm. Check ACWD's hardness map for your street. Harder water means more spotting, so a protective glass coating pays off more in the north.
Can you replace the old slider on my 1960s tub without retiling?
Often, yes. If the tile is sound, we remove the old track, clean and patch the screw holes, and mount a new slider or fixed screen. If the old frame hid cracked tile or soft grout, we will point that out before quoting, since glass should not be mounted on a failing wall.
How far do you travel to Fremont from Santa Clara?
Fremont is part of our service area, a straight run up I-880 from Santa Clara. Measuring visits and installs are scheduled the same way as jobs closer in.
What thickness of frameless glass do you recommend?
For most Fremont walk-in showers, 3/8-inch tempered glass works well and keeps hinge loads reasonable. Larger doors or tall panels may call for 1/2-inch. We decide based on door width, wall framing and the hardware you pick.
