Custom Glass for Homes on Large Lots
Shower doors in Los Altos Hills tend to be custom work. The town requires a minimum lot size of one acre and allows one primary dwelling per lot, so most homes are single-family houses with room to spread out. Census estimates put owner occupancy at 93.4%. Bathrooms here are often larger than average, with walk-in showers, wet rooms and tall ceilings that call for glass measured and cut to that specific space.
Two water districts, two very different waters
Before we talk about coatings, we ask which water bill you get, because the town is split. According to Valley Water, Purissima Hills Water District serves the northern part of town, and California Water Service serves the remainder. The two supplies are not alike.
Purissima Hills Water District buys all of its water from the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission's Hetch Hetchy system and describes it as high quality, soft water. The Bay Area Water Supply and Conservation Agency profile says the district receives 100% of its supply from two San Francisco turnouts and covers about two-thirds of the town.
Cal Water's part of town gets roughly 72% of its supply from Valley Water and 28% from well water, per Valley Water's listing. Cal Water's 2024 Los Altos Suburban report, which covers parts of Los Altos Hills, lists that groundwater at an average of 309 ppm hardness, against 111 ppm for its Valley Water supply. If your home is on Cal Water, mineral film on glass is more of a daily concern, and a protective coating moves from optional to strongly recommended.
Enclosures that fit the room
Larger bathrooms open up options that a standard alcove does not. Projects that suit homes like these:
- Frameless walk-in enclosures with one or more fixed panels and a swing door
- Floor-to-ceiling glass for steam-ready or tall-ceiling showers, where the header and venting have to be planned with the rest of the room
- Fixed glass panels for open, doorless showers where splash control still matters
- Tub glass doors for guest baths and children's bathrooms
- Semi-frameless doors for pool house or secondary baths where cost matters more than a seamless look
Terrain and access
The town sits among small hills, and long or steep driveways are common. Large glass panels are heavy and need a safe, clear path from the truck to the bathroom. During the estimate we look at that route, note stairs and tight turns, and plan panel sizes and crew size accordingly. Wikipedia also notes that the Altamont and Monta Vista faults pass through the town, which is one more reason solid wall anchoring and properly rated hardware matter.
Long-held homes
About 86.5% of residents lived in the same house a year earlier, and many families stay much longer. That means some bathrooms are on their second or third round of finishes, with older framed doors next to newer tile. We can replace a framed door with frameless glass without redoing the shower, provided the walls and curb are in good shape. If they are not, we will tell you before you commit to anything.

Los Altos Hills Questions
How do I know which water district serves my house?
Look at your water bill. If it comes from Purissima Hills Water District, you are on soft Hetch Hetchy water. If it comes from California Water Service, part of your supply is well water, which is harder and leaves more film on glass.
Can you build a floor-to-ceiling enclosure for a steam shower?
Yes, as long as the room is designed for it. A steam enclosure needs a sealed header or transom, a properly sloped ceiling and a steam generator sized for the space, which other trades handle. We coordinate the glass dimensions with your contractor or designer.
Our driveway is long and steep. Is that a problem for large panels?
It is something we plan for, not a reason to say no. We check the route during the estimate and size the crew and panels so the glass arrives safely.
Do you work on pool house and guest suite showers too?
Yes. Secondary baths often suit a semi-frameless or sliding door, which keeps cost down while matching the main house finishes.
