Menlo Park, One Neighborhood at a Time
Shower doors in Menlo Park have to suit a city that varies block by block. Wikipedia lists neighborhoods from Belle Haven east of Route 101, to the Willows and Suburban Park, to Felton Gables and Linfield Oaks, to Allied Arts west of El Camino Real, up to Sharon Heights in the hills. Owner occupancy is 54.2% according to Census estimates, so we see a mix of owners, landlords and condo associations.
A patchwork of water suppliers. Menlo Park does not have a single water utility. Menlo Park Municipal Water serves about half the city in two zones: an upper zone near Interstate 280 that includes Sharon Heights, and a lower zone east of El Camino Real. Its 2024 report lists hardness from 8.4 to 106 ppm with an average of 57 ppm, drawn from the San Francisco regional system. The rest of the city is served by Cal Water's Bear Gulch district, the O'Connor Tract Cooperative Water District and Palo Alto Park Mutual Water Company. Cal Water's 2023 Bear Gulch report averaged 46 ppm, which it classes as soft. In practice, most Menlo Park glass sees relatively soft water, and spotting is driven more by how the glass is dried than by minerals. A coating is a convenience here, not a must.
Sharon Heights and the hills. Sharon Heights was developed in the 1960s on the former 600-acre Frederick W. Sharon estate. Bathrooms from that decade often have a tub-shower combo with an aging framed slider, or a stall shower with an obscure-glass door. Swapping those for a frameless door or a clear tub glass door is a big visual change for a modest scope of work.
Older blocks near downtown. Menlo Park was permanently incorporated in 1927, and Wikipedia notes that army engineers at Camp Fremont paved the first streets and laid the first water and gas lines in 1917 and 1918. Houses in the older central neighborhoods may have bathrooms that have been reworked several times. We measure each wall at several points, because older rooms are rarely square, and we pick semi-frameless or custom-cut panels when frameless glass would leave visible gaps.
Permits and the fire district. The city's single-family alteration page says that changes to plumbing that alter the arrangement or type of the original installation are alterations that require a permit, and that the Menlo Park Fire Protection District may require its own review. The city will not issue a building permit until the fire district has approved a project that needs its approval. Homes in FEMA flood zones A, AE, AH or AO may also need a substantial improvement worksheet. A straight glass replacement rarely gets into any of this, but a full bathroom remodel can, so start with the city if walls or plumbing are moving.

Menlo Park Questions
Which water provider serves my Menlo Park home, and does it matter for glass?
Check your water bill. Menlo Park Municipal Water and Cal Water Bear Gulch both report fairly soft water, so spotting is mostly about drying habits. If you are on a smaller provider, its annual report will list hardness.
Does the fire district get involved in a shower door job?
Not for a simple glass swap. The fire district's review comes into play for projects that need it under a building permit. If your bathroom remodel is large, ask the city's building division early.
My Sharon Heights bathroom still has a 1960s framed slider. What are my options?
A frameless or semi-frameless tub door, a single fixed splash panel or a modern bypass slider. We look at the tub edge and wall condition before recommending one.
Do you work in Menlo Oaks and West Menlo Park?
Yes. Those areas are unincorporated San Mateo County, so any permit question goes to the county rather than the city.
